How long should work trousers be?

Lange vs korte broek
KennisJul 15, 20262 min read

How should work trousers fit and are long work trousers actually mandatory? These are questions that concern more people than you think. Work trousers that are too long or too short are uncomfortable and can even be dangerous. The right fit is therefore not a detail but a basic requirement for comfortable and safe working.

In this article we explain how long work trousers should be, how to choose the right size and when long work trousers are mandatory.

How long should work trousers be?

Work trousers should reach the ankles, with the bottom of the trouser leg just touching the footwear. Too long is unsafe: trousers that fall over the shoe can get caught and pose a tripping hazard. Too short is uncomfortable and offers less protection to the lower legs.

Many work trousers are offered in fixed inseam sizes, so that you can choose the trousers that best suit your height. Some models also have a double hem, allowing you to easily shorten the trouser leg without sacrificing quality.

How should work trousers fit?

Well-fitting work trousers are comfortable without constricting, provide sufficient freedom of movement and stay in place during intensive use. The waist must fit well: too wide and the trousers sag, too tight and they pinch when bending or kneeling.

When trying on, also pay attention to the fit in the hips and thigh. Work trousers are available in different fit variants: regular, slim and loose. A regular fit fits most people well and provides plenty of room for movement. Stretch material makes the pants even more flexible and comfortable, especially for jobs that involve a lot of kneeling, bending or climbing.

Are long work trousers mandatory?

There is no general law that requires work trousers to be long. Whether long trousers are mandatory depends on the risk assessment of the workplace and the employer's clothing policy. On construction sites, in technology or when working with dangerous machines or substances, long trousers may indeed be mandatory as protective equipment.

For work where the legs are not exposed to danger, such as office work or light warehouse work, shorts are permitted in many cases. Always consult your employer's clothing policy or the safety regulations of the work location.

Work trousers that fit well and last a long time

The Work Trousers Functional Stretch Redefined is a good example of work trousers with the right combination of fit and functionality. The regular fit is comfortable for most body types, the functional stretch panels provide freedom of movement and the Cordura reinforcements on the knees provide extra wear resistance. Made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, washable at 60 degrees.
