Specific rules apply to work clothing on a construction site. Not everyone is aware of what exactly is mandatory and what can differ per project. In this article we explain which work clothing is legally required on the construction site and what may apply in each situation.
The Working Conditions Act as a basis
The Working Conditions Act requires employers to provide personal protective equipment if the work requires it. On a construction site there are usually several risks at the same time: falling objects, sharp materials, dangerous traffic and heavy machinery. The employer is obliged to make a risk assessment and provide the correct protective clothing on that basis.
In addition to the Working Conditions Act, the Safety and Health Plan (VGP) of a construction project determines which additional clothing rules apply at that specific location. The VGP is drawn up by the client or main contractor and is binding for everyone who enters the construction site.
Safety shoes: almost always mandatory
Safety shoes with steel or composite toecaps are mandatory on almost every construction site. They protect the feet from falling objects and penetrating materials. Depending on the work, an S1, S2 or S3 classification may be required, with S3 also having a penetration-resistant sole.
Helmet and protective clothing
A helmet is mandatory on construction sites where overhead work takes place or where there is a risk of falling objects. Sturdy work clothing that protects the skin against mechanical contact is also required on most construction sites. Work trousers with knee protection are highly recommended for work that involves a lot of kneeling.
High visibility clothing: when mandatory?
High visibility clothing is mandatory on construction sites where there is moving traffic or heavy machinery. This certainly applies to work along public roads or at locations where trucks and cranes operate. The clothing must meet the EN ISO 20471 standard. The additional RWS standard applies to Rijkswaterstaat projects.
