Autumn Workwear: Softshells, Bodywarmers and Midlayers
How do you stay comfortable outdoors when temperatures and weather change throughout the workday?
Why the right choice in autumn workwear makes the difference
In autumn, temperature, wind and rain can shift several times within a single working day. A single heavy jacket is not always the best solution: it may be welcome early in the morning but too warm by midday. A layered system with a windproof or water-repellent outer layer and an insulating midlayer offers more control. You can remove a layer as the temperature rises without losing protection against wind or rain.
A common question is whether a softshell offers enough protection in autumn. This depends on the type of work and the weather conditions. A softshell is windproof and water-repellent, making it suitable for dry to lightly wet conditions. During prolonged rain, a separate rain jacket or a model with a higher water column rating is a more logical choice. A tech shell or softshell with a high breathability rating, prevents overheating during active work.
A bodywarmer is often used as a midlayer under a jacket, or as a standalone layer on days when a full jacket is too warm. Because the arms remain free, freedom of movement is preserved during physical work.
Work jackets: softshells and tech shells
The Luxury Softshell is windproof, water-repellent and breathable, with improved water resistance compared to a standard softshell. The Tech Shell is windproof and waterproof, featuring taped seams, a detachable hood and underarm zip vents for extra ventilation during active work. For those who prefer certified recycled material, the Luxury Hooded Softshell Redefined is an option: windproof, water-repellent and breathable, with a removable hood and reflective elements for extra visibility in low light. This jacket is also available as the Women's Luxury Hooded Softshell Redefined, with a fit adapted to the female body shape. Both Redefined models meet EN 14058 (protection against cool environments) and EN ISO 13688 (general requirements for protective clothing). The full range of work jackets also includes rain jackets, parkas and winter jackets for wet or cold conditions.
Bodywarmers as a midlayer
The Puffer Bodywarmer Rewear is made from GRS-certified recycled polyester, windproof and water-repellent, with a fitted rib collar and a zip closure covered by a storm flap. The Bodywarmer Redefined is also windproof, water-repellent and breathable, made from certified recycled polyester with reflective elements. For work requiring visibility, the Bodywarmer High Vis Redefined offers the same properties along with high visibility in line with EN ISO 20471 class 2. All three models can be combined with a softshell or fleece vest as an extra layer. The full overview of bodywarmers also includes bicolor versions and models for industrial use.
Fleece vests and fleece jackets as an inner layer
Worn under a softshell or bodywarmer, a fleece midlayer adds extra insulation without making the outfit unnecessarily heavy. The Luxury Fleece Jacket is made from polyester and also available as the Women's Fleece Jacket, featuring a zipped chest pocket, thumbholes and elasticated edges at the collar, cuffs and hem for a good fit under a jacket. The Sweater Redefined is made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, washable at 60°C and suitable for intensive use. The Knitted Fleece Jacket Redefined is specifically developed as a midlayer, combining insulation with freedom of movement. The full range of work sweaters also includes polo sweaters and sweaters with additional certifications for specific work environments.
Layering for changing weather
Combining a windproof or water-repellent outer layer with an insulating inner layer offers the most flexibility during autumn. A softshell or bodywarmer worn over a fleece vest or fleece jacket retains warmth in low temperatures and can be adjusted as conditions change. For work requiring visibility, the High Vis versions meet EN ISO 20471, while the Redefined range is made from certified recycled material for those focused on the environmental impact of their workwear.
